Abstract

The paper deals with a new concept of “developing sustainability” which defines the key directions for stable, balanced and environmentally safe development of the urbanized areas. Large cities have an opportunity to achieve the sustainable development and the highest quality of life for current and future generations. For residents the term “sustainability” is based on global aspires: cultural vitality, economic prosperity, social justice and compassion, smart mobility and access to clean water and air, parks and beautiful urban landscapes. A goal of urban planning is synonymous with sustainability in that decisions must not be made solely for an immediate result, but must be considered in light of its cumulative, longterm effects. The paper considers some aspects of the environmental, geoecological, urban-planning and other possibilities of sustainable and balanced development of urban systems based on the case of Moscow city.
