Abstract

In 2011—2015 peculiarities of spatial distribution of nests of hooded crows in different habitats on the territory of Volgograd were studied. GPS navigator was used for mapping. The differences in the nesting density and the height of nest location were shown. Probable reasons of the differences are the quantity of trees suitable for nesting, the presence of available food sources and the level of anxiety by humans. Hooded crow started to settle and nest in the urban environment in Volgograd at the same time and in the same way as in other settlements. But due to the climate peculiarities of the region there are some differences between Volgograd’s crows and birds in other cities: they prefer to use poplars and elms for placing nests. The obtained data can serve as a basis for developing recommendations for the regulation of the number of crows in urban areas where they affect negatively to the sanitary condition of the city, as well as for further work on the identification of population adaptations of species in anthropogenically transformed environment.
