Abstract

The obscure subject is presented in the article — the usage of “greened roof» in fortifications, their features and value. Some specific examples of historical sites of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Serbia, France are given. Many details are given about Petrovaradinskaya fortress in Serbia, and its layout peculiarities based on their own experience of the authors. A short biography of famous expert in the field of fortification and architecture S^astien Le Prestre de Vauban is also presented in the article. Given schemes give an opportunity to draw an analogy between fortresses and “ideal cities” projects, classical architecture. The conclusion of the article is a quote from the poem “Don Juan” Lord Byron dedicated to Marshal de Vauban.
